The Social Ecology major embodies the distinctive interdisciplinary approach of the School of Social Ecology. Enrolled students complete coursework across all three departments: Criminology, Law & Society, Psychological Science, and Urban Planning and Public Policy. Graduates emerge with comprehensive knowledge of how these fields interconnect to address social, psychological, environmental, and legal challenges.
As an academic division, the School of Social Ecology focuses on addressing critical societal and environmental issues through collaborative, community-oriented research. Similar to biological ecology's examination of organisms and their surroundings, social ecology explores the dynamic between humans and their environments. A fundamental principle is that intricate issues require analysis of how individuals both influence and are shaped by their various contexts - including family structures, educational systems, social connections, workplaces, cultural norms, communities, and natural surroundings.

Researchers and students within the School of Social Ecology employ scientific approaches to investigate numerous urgent concerns. These focus areas are organized into three main research clusters: Healthy Populations and Environments, Crime Reduction and Equity, and Technological Advancement and Human Development. Specific studies encompass diverse subjects such as stress management, childhood and adult trauma effects, successful aging, flood mitigation strategies, poverty reduction, urban sustainability, juvenile justice system improvements, eyewitness accuracy, jury behavior, youth violence prevention, law enforcement practices, crime pattern analysis, and social media's influence on child development.
