Philosophy instruction primarily involves interactive discussions where students play an active role. To facilitate meaningful dialogue between students and instructors, class sizes are kept small whenever feasible. The department offers both courses of broad appeal to all students and specialized classes examining philosophical questions within specific fields like art or science. Students should meet with the undergraduate advisor to identify courses that align with their individual academic goals. The curriculum also caters to Philosophy majors planning to pursue professional programs (such as law) or graduate studies in philosophy. Exceptional students may participate in our honors program, working one-on-one with faculty to develop advanced philosophical skills and create an outstanding research paper. While valuable in itself, this experience also benefits those considering graduate school. Students who complete this additional project (beyond regular major requirements) will earn honors recognition on their degree.
