The Drama Department, consistently ranked among the nation's top ten theater programs, merges expansive liberal arts education with specialized training across multiple theatrical disciplines. Each year, the department stages a diverse lineup of productions, including plays, musicals, and world premiere works that explore different scales and performer-audience dynamics. The founding faculty envisioned graduates who blend analytical thinking with rigorous theatrical training, cultivating an atmosphere that nurtures artistic innovation alongside deep study of design, performance, and academic research. With its unique mix of esteemed resident faculty, renowned visiting artists, engaged students, and outstanding facilities, the department delivers a program that's both artistically vibrant and academically demanding. Current faculty members are accomplished professionals in their respective fields, ensuring students receive up-to-date, industry-relevant instruction. The Honors Directing Program enables drama majors to specialize in stage direction, offering coursework in fundamental and advanced techniques, collaborative studio sessions with graduate directing students, and the chance to helm two full productions in the Director Class Projects series. Honors candidates may also earn credit by assisting on mainstage productions or completing internships with professional theater companies.
