Our Plan II alternative is formally accredited by the Council of Graduate Schools as a Professional Science Master's (PSM) program. This pathway demands 36 units of graduate and upper-division coursework, with a minimum of 20 units being graduate-level courses in the primary discipline. Students must complete an internship and pass a comprehensive final exam in their major subject area, with no thesis requirement. The Viticulture and Enology Graduate Group provides advanced education spanning grapevine genetics, physiology, and biochemistry, alongside wine chemistry, microbiology, sensory science, and winemaking engineering. Potential research areas encompass grapevine molecular biology, microbial studies, fermentation chemistry, aging processes, and analytical-sensory relationships. While this program solely offers an M.S. degree, doctoral studies are available through affiliated graduate groups including agricultural/environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, food science, genetics, microbiology, plant biology, and soils/biogeochemistry.
