The program provides education in plant pathology, covering diseases triggered by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Graduate students can focus on various specializations such as the physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of plant pathogens or host-pathogen relationships, the biology and ecology of pathogens, disease epidemiology and modeling, as well as plant disease diagnosis and management through chemical, biological, and integrated control approaches. The Biotechnology emphasis offers a robust interdisciplinary concentration, incorporating bioethics, business, and legal aspects of biotechnology, along with a 3-6 month internship at a biotech firm, research lab, or national laboratory. Dr. Kjelstrom, the Program Coordinator, supports students in securing internships, crafting compelling cover letters and resumes, and building professional skills relevant to the business sector.
