The program provides education in plant pathology, covering diseases triggered by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Graduate students can focus on areas such as the physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of plant pathogens or host-pathogen relationships, the biology and ecology of pathogens, disease epidemiology and modeling, as well as diagnosing and managing plant diseases through chemical, biological, and integrated approaches.
The UC Davis Plant Pathology graduate program ranks among the top globally, renowned for its excellence. Our graduates achieve strong placement rates across diverse fields. Students enjoy numerous chances to engage with faculty and fellow researchers through classes, Departmental Retreats, Graduate Student Retreats, and year-round social events. We attract many qualified applicants annually and maintain a selective admissions process. PhD candidates can now rotate through potential faculty research groups, while MS students are directly placed into a research team. We urge prospective students to reach out to potential advisors before the application window closes (Oct-Dec). Additionally, we recommend exploring and applying for fellowship funding. Securing fellowship support, even partially, highlights your competitiveness and facilitates faculty acceptance into their labs.
Consideration for program admission requires a bachelor’s degree. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Applicants are strongly encouraged to communicate with potential research advisers (major professors) prior to admission to the program.
