The Neuroscience Graduate Group stands as one of the nation's top training programs, providing an extensive curriculum and exceptional research prospects for students pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, while also collaborating with Physician and Veterinary Scientist Training Programs. With more than 80 faculty members from 20 diverse departments—spanning the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, College of Biological Sciences, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and College of Letters and Sciences—the program fosters interdisciplinary learning. This broad academic network enables students to explore specialized fields such as molecular, cellular, developmental, systems, behavioral, computational, cognitive, and neurological neuroscience.
Upon enrollment, each student is paired with a graduate advisor to navigate program requirements and selects a major professor to oversee dissertation research. Typically, Ph.D. candidates fulfill coursework and teaching obligations within the first two years, complete preliminary and qualifying exams, and then focus on research under their major professor's guidance.
The Biophotonics and Bioimaging designated emphasis, based in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, acts as a center for cutting-edge research and education at UC Davis. It unites experts from the Davis and Sacramento campuses, including the College of Engineering, School of Medicine, and College of Letters and Science. This program equips students with expertise in light-biology interactions and advances innovative technologies for scientific and medical applications.
