The M.A. program's foundation focuses on three key disciplines: German Cultural and Intellectual History, German Literary History, and Language Pedagogy. Under the guidance of the Graduate Advisor, students craft personalized study plans to comprehensively address these core subjects. This course listing serves as a framework to help students structure their academic journey. The UC Davis German Department equips graduate students with a strong scholarly foundation while fostering creative, cross-disciplinary exploration. Many doctoral candidates pair their German Literature studies with interdisciplinary specializations such as Classics and Classical Receptions, Critical Theory, Feminist Theory and Research, or Second Language Acquisition. Both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs combine academic rigor with adaptability, providing specialized study in theoretical and historical aspects of German literature and philosophy, alongside a linguistics-focused pathway.
Admission to the M.A. program in German requires a B.A or B.A. equivalent in German Literature or Culture or a field related to German Literature or Culture (for example, Comparative Literature or History) as well as demonstrated fluency in the German language.
