Landscape architecture and environmental design focus on the connection between humans and their surroundings. This is primarily demonstrated through the organization, creation, and utilization of both physical and everyday spaces. Since design represents human intention materialized in the built environment, a key emphasis lies in how communities influence the physical landscape at various scales. The field operates as a reciprocal and evolving practice where each element informs its counterpart. Evaluating these processes demands expertise in diverse disciplines such as culture, ecology, policy, economics, and history. A shared characteristic of the LAED concentration is its commitment to cross-disciplinary exploration and comprehension. Graduate studies in LAED might involve examining landscape patterns through geographic information systems, advanced design and planning, historical/cultural investigations of spaces, or refining participatory approaches for community engagement.
