The Spanish graduate program ranks among the country's premier Spanish departments. In fact, Academic Analytics' yearly survey places us first in research output within our discipline. Our curriculum provides thorough education in Iberian and Latin American - encompassing Portuguese and Brazilian - Literatures and Cultures, along with Hispanic Linguistics. Faculty members embrace innovative theoretical approaches and interdisciplinary methodologies while maintaining focus on national literary traditions. Doctoral candidates must complete coursework covering Spanish language history and literary/linguistic studies, plus demonstrate proficiency in two non-Spanish foreign languages.
The Native American Studies Designated Emphasis takes a hemispheric perspective on Indigenous communities across the Americas - examining nations, tribes, and peoples whose ancestors have inhabited these lands since ancient times. This distinctive continental framework considers both the growing displacement of Indigenous populations and draws upon Native knowledge systems (through Indigenous voices and texts) to explore issues affecting Native communities, including their enduring survival strategies developed over generations.
