The Graduate Program Membership in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering periodically evaluates the Ph.D. degree criteria and establishes what students need to complete to obtain their graduate degree. Candidates must adhere to the requirements active during their initial enrollment quarter, though they may request the Graduate Adviser for Continuing Students to switch to the latest year's standards. It's important to understand that students cannot request to revert to requirements from before their enrollment period. The Ph.D. program is designed for those seeking profound expertise and the ability to conduct autonomous, in-depth research in their chosen field, working closely with faculty members. Applicants can enter the Ph.D. program directly, regardless of whether they hold an M.S. degree.
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Program provides both Ph.D. and M.S. degrees. Departmental research pushes design boundaries across various domains including manufacturing, micro- and nano-technology, vehicle systems, biomechanics, aircraft structures, sensors, control systems, mechatronics, combustion, and energy solutions. Graduate researchers develop expertise to tackle core challenges in these areas while designing sophisticated, integrated systems. This collaborative setting encourages cross-disciplinary work, incorporating principles from mechanical engineering, mathematics, electrical engineering, materials science, biology, and nanotechnology. Graduates emerge with both the analytical and practical capabilities needed for advanced research and academic careers in mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
Consideration for program admission requires a bachelor’s degree. Admission to graduate standing normally requires a minimum of 3.5 (out of 4.0) GPA including a minimum of 3.5 (out of 4.0) for all coursework taken in a completed master’s program.
