The program highlights combining fundamental and practical approaches to entomology for addressing biological, agricultural, and environmental challenges. Students may focus on various specialties including pest management, pollination science, insect chemical interactions, sensory biology, population dynamics, insect physiology, pesticide studies, ecological pest control, evolutionary biology, forensic insect studies, disease-carrying insects, and insect classification. UC Davis offers exceptional research facilities, including the Richard M. Bohart Museum of Entomology with its global insect specimens and the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Center dedicated to bee research. Modern laboratories feature advanced equipment, while growth chambers, farm plots, and greenhouses support student research.
The Designated Emphasis in Vector-borne Disease Biology concentrates on studying disease-causing microorganisms, their transmission by arthropods, and their impact on plants, animals, and humans. Graduates of this program will be equipped to develop and assess strategies for controlling agriculturally, veterinarily, and medically significant pathogens.
