Urban planners and regional developers craft the physical settings of our neighborhoods, designing spaces that influence our everyday experiences. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, these professionals work to make our living and working areas both eco-friendly and resource-conscious. The sustainable environmental design program equips students to carefully plan communities, build vibrant cities, establish efficient transit networks, and foster inclusive, healthy urban areas. Key coursework covers urban and environmental design, sustainable development principles, eco-conscious construction, municipal planning processes, community engagement, and sustainability communication. Students take core classes from the landscape architecture and environmental design curriculum while selecting electives from diverse fields including civil engineering, community development, plant sciences, and environmental policy. Every student completes a culminating capstone project in their last term.
After graduation, alumni can explore careers in public agencies, nonprofit groups, educational institutions, or private companies. They also gain excellent preparation for advanced studies in urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, public policy, government administration, legal studies, property development, and similar disciplines.
