The Plant Sciences program equips students with a scientific foundation to understand plant growth and development within agricultural systems, as well as the utilization of plant products for food, fiber, and environmental improvement. Modern scientific and technological advancements offer fresh perspectives and opportunities for leveraging plants to meet the challenges of supplying renewable food, fiber, and energy to an expanding global population while reducing ecological harm. Plant Sciences graduates possess the expertise to contribute to diverse agricultural and environmental objectives or pursue further studies in the field.
The coursework emphasizes biological and physical sciences while fostering a comprehensive understanding of how plants acquire and use environmental resources for growth. It highlights the impact of genetics, cultivation methods, and environmental factors on crop development and yield, along with postharvest handling and commercialization of plant-based goods. Students can specialize in Crop Production, Plant Genetics & Breeding, or Postharvest Biology & Technology, or customize their studies through an Individual option tailored to specific interests or career aspirations. Hands-on learning is integral, achieved through lab courses and internships, with an Honors thesis opportunity for seniors.
Graduates are well-prepared for diverse career paths, including technical and managerial roles in agriculture, business, farming, consulting, public and private organizations, Cooperative Extension, international development, education, or agricultural and environmental media. The program also provides a strong foundation for advanced studies in plant biology, genetics, horticulture, agronomy, biotechnology, ecology, environmental science, pest management, education, or business administration.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
