Physics explores the fundamental principles governing the universe, from its smallest particles to its grandest structures. As a UC Davis physics student, you'll collaborate with faculty on groundbreaking research spanning elementary particles, everyday matter, and cosmic evolution. The program starts with foundational courses in classical and modern physics, complemented by six quarters of calculus and mathematics. This prepares you for advanced study in areas like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, cosmology, and experimental techniques.
The Physics & Astronomy Department provides three degree options: a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and two Bachelor of Science programs (Physics with an Astrophysics option, and Applied Physics). The A.B. degree offers comprehensive physics knowledge while allowing for broader liberal arts studies. The B.S. degrees, ideal for professional physicists or technical careers, deliver rigorous training - with Applied Physics focusing on specialized applications. Both B.S. tracks prepare students for graduate studies or immediate employment in physics-related fields.
Physics graduates pursue diverse paths including R&D in academic, government, or corporate settings; teaching at various levels; laboratory management; or industrial production and sales. The major also serves as excellent preparation for graduate programs in interdisciplinary fields like biophysics, geophysics, astrophysics, computer science, and materials science.
