The Neurobiology, Physiology, & Behavior (NPB) major focuses on exploring fundamental biological processes shared by all animal life. Core functions like growth, reproduction, movement, response to stimuli, and homeostasis maintenance are examined. These processes rely on intricately coordinated physiological systems, with nervous and endocrine systems playing key roles in shaping behavior and environmental interactions. Students investigate these mechanisms at cellular, organ system, and whole-organism levels, studying their regulation and behavioral connections.
During their first two years, NPB majors establish a strong scientific foundation through coursework in chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. Upperclassmen can choose from specialized NPB courses and related advanced classes. The program offers three focused tracks: Neurobiology, Physiology, and Organism-Environmental Interactions. Students may develop customized study plans with approval from Biology Academic Success Center (BASC) advisors. The curriculum includes opportunities for advanced lab work and faculty-mentored independent research projects.
Graduates with an NPB degree gain preparation for various career paths, including secondary and higher education teaching, research positions, and health professions like medicine, veterinary science, and allied health fields. The program also provides excellent training for biotechnology careers and other biology-related industries, serving as a springboard for professional or graduate studies.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
