Spanish serves as the primary language in over 20 nations globally. The Spanish major curriculum ensures mastery in speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing while introducing students to the intellectual and cultural heritage of Spanish-speaking communities through language, literature, and cultural studies. Pursuing a Spanish major helps you achieve fluency in both written and spoken Spanish while exploring the rich literary and cultural traditions of Hispanic societies. Foundational and intermediate courses refine your abilities, setting the stage for advanced exploration of the language and significant Spanish literary texts. Students are urged to enhance their learning by studying abroad in a Spanish-speaking nation via the Global Learning Hub. Additionally, you can opt for a dual major with disciplines like Chicanx studies, linguistics, international relations, comparative literature, or economics.
This program, whether pursued independently or alongside other majors, can pave the way for graduate studies in Spanish language, literature, or cultural studies, as well as careers beyond teaching—including library science, law, medicine, government, social services, business, or international relations.
