The countless microorganisms surrounding us and inside our bodies profoundly influence our daily lives. While some play crucial roles in bodily functions and food production, others trigger serious illnesses. Microbiology intersects with diverse disciplines including biochemistry, cellular biology, evolutionary studies, genetics, molecular biology, disease mechanisms, and physiology. This major equips students for advanced studies and various healthcare professions. Breakthroughs in microbiology have revolutionized fields like farming, biotech, environmental science, healthcare, and animal medicine. Your academic journey starts with core classes in life sciences, chemistry, math, and physics. Upper-level coursework delves into specialized biological topics, with options including microbial ecosystems, bacterial functions and heredity, virus studies, and microorganism classification. Students can opt for an A.B. degree, allowing broader elective choices, or a B.S. degree with intensive biological science training.
The Molecular & Medical Microbiology Undergraduate Program provides both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees through the College of Biological Sciences. Both programs develop students' quantitative abilities and comprehensive biological knowledge while specializing in microbial life. The B.S. track emphasizes mathematical proficiency, biochemical principles, and lab techniques, whereas the A.B. version includes more humanities coursework. Prospective students should consult with a Biology Academic Success Center (BASC) advisor to determine which degree path best aligns with their professional aspirations.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
