Geology explores Earth's composition, formation, and the dynamic forces that shape our world and its ecosystems. This field examines continental and oceanic origins, seismic and volcanic activity, climate fluctuations, and their effects on life's development. Geologists employ the concept of deep time - a distinctive temporal framework setting their discipline apart from other physical sciences. Much geological research focuses on human-Earth interactions, encompassing resource management (minerals, fossil fuels, water), hazard assessment (earthquakes, eruptions, floods), environmental remediation, land use strategies, and climate change analysis.
Practical applications of geoscience address human-environment relationships through resource extraction (petroleum, groundwater), natural disaster preparedness (seismic events, mass movements), ecological restoration, and climate research. Geology professionals can positively influence planetary wellbeing through diverse interdisciplinary careers. Following foundational coursework in STEM disciplines, students may select between an A.B. (broader liberal arts focus) or B.S. (specialized geological training) degree path.
A Geology degree equips graduates with theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills for geoscience careers across public, private, academic, and research sectors. The curriculum incorporates research opportunities, practical internships, and field studies to prepare students for professional advancement. The B.S. program meets California's educational requirements for Professional Geologist certification.
