Berkeley Social Welfare trains students to become leaders in social welfare and social work. For nearly 80 years since 1944, we've graduated more than 11,000 social work practitioners and researchers who now hold leadership positions across research, education, advanced practice, and administration. Our graduate programs include the professional Master of Social Welfare (MSW) and the academic Doctor of Philosophy in Social Welfare (PhD). The FlexMSW Extended Program provides a three-year MSW option designed for working professionals in social work and other qualified students unable to commit to a full-time program. Participants in this part-time program complete the identical 54-unit curriculum as full-time MSW students, but spread across three years of part-time study (including two summer terms) rather than the standard two-year full-time format.
