The department provides an accredited professional Master of Architecture (MArch), along with post-professional Master of Advanced Architectural Design (MAAD), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. Architects deliver services spanning the complete building lifecycle—from initial concepts to design visualization, craftsmanship, construction, and evaluating both physical and virtual environments. Embedded within the College of Environmental Design, Berkeley's Architecture Department was established on principles of cross-disciplinary teamwork and innovative exploration. Its undergraduate curriculum encompasses design theory, architectural and urban history, sustainable building science, structural engineering, socio-cultural influences, global environmental design, digital modeling, urban planning, and visual arts.
The Master of Architecture curriculum offers a thorough and demanding education for students pursuing their initial professional accreditation in architecture. Graduate candidates can tailor their journey through this two-to-three-year intensive program based on prior academic and professional backgrounds. The department welcomes applicants from all undergraduate disciplines. Program duration, required course units, and specific coursework may differ depending on the applicant's academic history, work experience, and any prior graduate studies. The Master of Architecture Committee determines individual placement after reviewing each application.
