The Designated Emphasis in Development Engineering (DE in DevEng) equips students through coursework, research guidance, and career preparation to create, test, and assess technological solutions aimed at enhancing economic and social progress in challenging, resource-limited environments. This interdisciplinary program serves UC Berkeley doctoral candidates from any discipline whose thesis work involves technology applications for poverty alleviation. Applicants from all academic departments are welcome(opens in a new tab). Originally funded by USAID's Global Development Lab(opens in a new tab), the initiative draws from Berkeley's existing expertise in human-centered design, development economics, data analytics, remote monitoring, innovation technologies, and impact evaluation.
