Students aiming to pursue a Biostatistics PhD without a master's degree (with very few exceptions for those entering directly from undergraduate programs) should apply to the MA/PhD track. Instead of taking a formal qualifying exam, MA candidates who wish to transition into UC Berkeley's Biostatistics PhD program right after completing their MA can apply during the initial semester of their second year. This approach doesn't extend the timeline for earning the doctorate, as the first two years' coursework is identical for both the Biostatistics MA and PhD programs.
Numerous PhD graduates secure faculty roles in public health, medical, and statistics/mathematics departments at universities worldwide. Others pursue research careers in pharmaceutical firms, hospital research divisions, non-profit organizations, and technology companies.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
