The Department of Demography provides an interdisciplinary graduate program awarding MA and PhD degrees in Demography. This field focuses on the scientific analysis of human populations, addressing critical policy matters including Third World economic growth, aging societies, environmental concerns, health and mortality trends, family structure evolution, migration patterns, and ethnic studies. Demography maintains close academic connections with disciplines like sociology, economics, historical studies, anthropology, biological sciences, public health, and statistical analysis. UC Berkeley's program stands among the limited U.S. institutions granting standalone graduate degrees in demography, rather than treating it merely as a specialization within other departments. This approach enables deeper demographic focus while allowing adaptable study across related fields. The curriculum emphasizes both demographic methodology and its integration with social science theories.
The master's program serves both as a terminal degree for professional careers and as an intermediate step for doctoral candidates in demography or allied fields. Core master's level coursework also fulfills requirements for the doctoral program.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
