This discipline examines key theories and research methods for analyzing race and ethnicity as political identities. Incorporating scholarship from various social sciences, we'll investigate diverse subjects relevant to political systems in the U.S. and globally. Key areas of exploration include: defining and quantifying identity, understanding what triggers and shapes identity mobilization, examining political representation of identities, analyzing intersections between racial/ethnic identities and other social identities, studying connections between diversity and civil society, evaluating immigrant integration factors, and identifying democratic models that support diverse identities. Course materials will alternate weekly between U.S.-focused content and international perspectives from regions like Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Given that race and ethnicity studies overlap with all political science subfields, our objective is to equip students with both foundational knowledge and research tools to conduct independent scholarly work in this area.
