Nuclear security and nonproliferation is an interdisciplinary field focused on mission-critical applications across science, technology, and policy. Investigations in this domain encompass creating detectors and algorithms to detect, pinpoint, and visualize special nuclear materials, along with active and passive interrogation methods for intercepting illicit nuclear substances. The field also involves innovating new tools and approaches for IAEA safeguards, integrating multisensor systems and data analysis for national security and proliferation monitoring, as well as advancing nuclear forensic techniques—both pre- and post-detonation—through nuclear chemistry, mass spectrometry, and cutting-edge analytical methods. This discipline combines policy frameworks to address intricate nuclear security risks and proliferation issues, connecting theoretical research with real-world applications.
