The Microbiology Graduate Group consists of 53 faculty members spanning various departments, colleges, and schools, including Plant and Microbial Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Public Health, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, Optometry, and Integrative Biology. Administered by the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, the group grants PhD degrees in Microbiology. Students benefit from a flexible curriculum that enables specialization while exploring interdisciplinary perspectives. The program provides comprehensive training in microbiology, covering molecular and cellular aspects as well as microbial relationships—both beneficial and harmful—with other organisms.
Faculty research within the Graduate Group in Microbiology focuses on four key areas: ecology and evolution, genetics and development, physiology and biochemistry, and host-microbe interactions. Many faculty members work across multiple categories, and their research ranges from investigating core biological principles to applied studies in microbial control and utilization. Some faculty engage in both fundamental and applied research endeavors.
