Berkeley Law stands out among top US law schools by offering its own interdisciplinary graduate program focused on the social, philosophical, and humanistic aspects of law, awarding MA and PhD degrees in Jurisprudence and Social Policy (JSP). The JSP Program encourages the examination of law and legal systems through multiple academic lenses, such as history, economics, philosophy, sociology, and political science. As the pioneering law and society program in North America, JSP continues to dominate this expanding field due to its comprehensive curriculum and academic excellence.
Faculty members at Berkeley Law who lead the JSP Program come from diverse academic backgrounds and maintain connections with other university departments and research centers.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are:
a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution;
a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and

Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
