The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures provides a doctoral program specializing in Japanese Language, exclusively accepting PhD candidates.
Typically, applicants to the graduate program should possess an undergraduate background equivalent to this department's major. Those without BA or MA degrees in East Asian Languages and Cultures (or Japanese) or related disciplines may still apply. Accepted students lacking this background often need to complete additional coursework, potentially extending the standard seven-year degree timeline.
The department exclusively enrolls PhD candidates. Applicants must specify the PhD as their intended degree. Students entering without an MA must first fulfill MA requirements (including coursework and thesis) at Berkeley before advancing to doctoral studies. Those holding an MA degree upon admission may enter directly into the PhD program, subject to evaluation after their first year for continuation approval.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
