The Department of History of Art provides a combined master's and doctoral program (MA/PhD) designed to prepare students for academic positions, research writing, and specialized museum roles. While the program doesn't accept applicants seeking only an MA degree, students can earn one after completing Stage I PhD requirements. Through close collaboration with faculty in coursework, seminars, and independent research, students develop critical thinking skills and comprehensive knowledge of art history's methodologies. The program actively promotes interdisciplinary studies, drawing on Berkeley's renowned departments in humanities and social sciences. Students can also pursue formal interdisciplinary tracks through Designated Emphases programs in areas like film studies, folklore, gender studies, and critical theory.
