The Energy and Resources Group welcomes exceptional candidates to its Ph.D. program, structured to foster and enable doctoral scholars in conducting thorough, cross-disciplinary, and innovative research focused on energy, natural resources, and environmental studies. Typically, students complete the Ph.D. in Energy and Resources within four years after obtaining their Master's Degree.
This academic unit functions as an interconnected network comprising graduate students, principal faculty members, over 200 associated scholars across the university, and a worldwide alumni community exceeding 600 members. The program delivers specialized education in cross-cutting analysis and investigation, aiming to generate groundbreaking insights for both environmental sustainability and human welfare.
Being among the pioneering interdisciplinary initiatives in this domain, the Energy and Resources program has built a distinguished legacy of conducting impactful, state-of-the-art research and translating these concepts into practical solutions operating from community to international scales.
The curriculum addresses contemporary advancements in the discipline while highlighting diverse academic viewpoints and approaches: fundamental domains encompass economics, social sciences, engineering, humanities, and environmental studies.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
