Numerous challenges in health, medicine, and biological sciences are tackled through data collection and analysis. The Biostatistics Group focuses on creating and implementing methods to interpret such data effectively. This program provides education in statistical and biostatistical theory, computational analysis methods, and practical applications in biomedical research. Instruction comes primarily from faculty in the Division of Biostatistics (School of Public Health) and the Department of Statistics (College of Letters & Science), offering diverse perspectives on data analysis.
Prospective PhD candidates in Biostatistics must possess a master's degree in Biostatistics or a related discipline. The doctoral program typically involves 4-6 semesters of coursework in biostatistics, statistics, and an additional field (such as biology, environmental health, or epidemiology). With no fixed course requirements, students can tailor their studies to their academic background and research interests. The curriculum includes both foundational topics and cutting-edge developments in biostatistics and statistics. PhD graduates gain comprehensive expertise in these areas, preparing them for academic careers that demand proficiency in research design, methodology, and effective communication of findings.
Doctoral alumni frequently secure faculty roles in public health, medical schools, and statistics/mathematics departments at universities worldwide. Others pursue research careers in pharmaceutical firms, hospital research divisions, non-profit organizations, and technology companies.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
