The Department of Mathematics provides doctoral programs in both Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.
Admission is granted for specific degree tracks: either the Mathematics PhD or Applied Mathematics PhD. The requirements for these two doctoral programs vary only slightly, and in practice, they're treated similarly. Most graduate students finish their PhD within 5-6 years.
Current students looking to switch between programs should meet with the graduate advisor located in 910 Evans Hall. While transfers between the two PhD programs are generally straightforward, they must be completed before attempting the qualifying exam. The department maintains a strict policy: applicants with prior graduate-level mathematics experience must demonstrate exceptional research potential.
Those wishing to transition into the department's PhD programs from other UC Berkeley programs, including the Group in Logic and the Methodology of Science, need to submit a formal application and should contact the Vice Chair for Graduate Studies.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
