The graduate program in African American Studies examines the experiences, traditions, and societal structures of people with African heritage across various regions. The curriculum emphasizes Africa, North America, and the Caribbean while encouraging interdisciplinary analysis of racial dynamics affecting African diaspora communities worldwide. This framework explores themes like progress and inequality, systems of control and authority, autonomy, collective action, and artistic innovation. Central to the program's academic mission are investigations into identity formation, social exclusion, spatial relationships, and race's fundamental influence on economic systems and class structures.
