The joint major programs cater to students aiming to pursue studies across two engineering disciplines, preparing them for careers in either field or roles demanding expertise in both areas. These programs balance coursework equally between both majors. Though they involve a somewhat heavier course load, students can finish within four years. Graduates receive both majors on their academic transcripts. Participants in this joint major are dually enrolled in the College of Engineering and College of Chemistry, with Chemistry serving as their home college.
Future national engineering challenges will demand professionals skilled in both chemical process and materials engineering. Key applications include converting coal to gas and liquid fuels, recovering metals from substandard ores and industrial waste, and managing environmental impacts of metallurgical operations. Graduates of this joint program will be well-positioned for opportunities across various industries and elite graduate schools.
