This major provides a versatile, cross-disciplinary curriculum that enables broad comparative exploration of South and Southeast Asian cultures, literature, religion, and history. The department offers instruction in 13 languages: Bengali, Burmese, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Khmer, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese. South and Southeast Asian Studies focuses on examining the rich civilizations of these regions, covering principal languages like Bengali, Sanskrit, Tagalog, and Vietnamese while providing specialized education in literature, philosophy, and religious traditions.
At Berkeley, South and Southeast Asian Studies majors can choose from fourteen language options. The Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies includes faculty experts across all domains of literature, history, and religious studies, spanning classical to contemporary periods. Faculty research extends across multiple countries including Burma, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Tibet, and Vietnam. This undergraduate program is administered through the College of Letters and Science.

To be considered for admission to UC Berkeley, international applicants must:
finish secondary school and
earn a certificate of completion, which allows admission to a university in their home country or country of graduation
The university requires further study, either completion of the two-year A-level program with a minimum of three academic exams, the IB diploma program, or another similar academic curriculum.
For (IBT) minimum score of 80 or better, Paper-based test (completed prior to Oct. 2017): Minimum score of 550 or better, Revised paper-delivered test (completed Oct. 2017 or later): Minimum score of 60 or better, (IELTS) Accepted with a 6.5 or better band score (academic modules)
