A global pioneer in social work education and welfare policy, Berkeley Social Welfare has trained more than 11,000 social work practitioners and scholars for leadership, research, teaching, and advanced practice positions. Since 1942, we've provided an undergraduate Social Welfare program culminating in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, administered through the College of Letters & Science.
The Social Welfare bachelor's program focuses on a liberal arts foundation rather than vocational training in social work—hence its classification as a BA degree rather than a professional Bachelor of Social Work (BSW).
This undergraduate program embodies Berkeley Social Welfare's mission to give students a comprehensive overview of U.S. social welfare challenges and policies within a social science framework. Learners explore structured systems of public and private social services along with fundamental social work methodologies. Through this curriculum, students develop the understanding required to comprehend, tackle, and engage in solving pressing societal issues across America.
