The Clinical Science Faculty at UC Berkeley engages in translational research focused on examining core biological and psychological mechanisms—including emotion regulation, sleep patterns, close relationships, social skills, personality traits, neural reward pathways, family interactions, and cultural influences—to enhance our comprehension and mitigation of human challenges. Our researchers investigate these mechanisms within vulnerable groups and clinical populations (such as those with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, sleep disturbances, neurodegenerative conditions like dementia, ADHD, and co-occurring disorders) as well as during therapeutic interventions. This treatment-oriented research both informs theoretical models of underlying mechanisms and advances more effective, culturally sensitive interventions for significant human difficulties.
