Psychology, as a field of scientific study, seeks to observe, interpret, and anticipate how living beings behave. This involves examining numerous elements that shape behavior - ranging from basic sensory perception to advanced thought processes, from genetic influences to social and cultural contexts, from childhood development mechanisms to those functioning in later life stages, and from typical growth patterns to psychological disorders. UC Berkeley's Psychology Department embodies this broad scope through six primary research domains: Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience, Clinical Science, Cognition, Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, and Social-Personality Psychology. While these specialized fields exist, the program emphasizes developing methodological, statistical, and analytical abilities that apply across all psychological disciplines rather than being limited to specific topics.

The psychology major fulfills three key roles:

For liberal arts students, psychology offers pathways to deeper self-awareness and understanding of human actions. The systematic examination of behavior has been a significant intellectual pursuit for over a century.
For those entering professions like medicine, law, education, or business, psychology delivers fundamental concepts and valuable insights.
For aspiring psychology graduate students, the undergraduate program builds a solid groundwork in research methodologies and diverse psychological content areas.
