The Economics Department hosts more than 1,500 undergraduate students. Those pursuing an economics degree can choose from diverse course offerings, spanning from historical economic studies to upper-level macroeconomic theory. The program actively promotes international study experiences, research involvement, and utilizing Berkeley's extensive academic resources.
Being a highly competitive program, admission to the Economics major requires meeting established prerequisites. Applicants must complete or be enrolled in all foundational courses when applying. Freshmen applicants must submit their major declaration by their fifth semester of college (excluding high school advanced credit units), unless they have under 80 cumulative units. Transfer students must fulfill outstanding prerequisites and apply during their initial Berkeley semester, with no unit restrictions applying to them.

To be considered for admission to UC Berkeley, international applicants must:
finish secondary school and
earn a certificate of completion, which allows admission to a university in their home country or country of graduation
The university requires further study, either completion of the two-year A-level program with a minimum of three academic exams, the IB diploma program, or another similar academic curriculum.
For (IBT) minimum score of 80 or better, Paper-based test (completed prior to Oct. 2017): Minimum score of 550 or better, Revised paper-delivered test (completed Oct. 2017 or later): Minimum score of 60 or better, (IELTS) Accepted with a 6.5 or better band score (academic modules)
