The Chinese Language undergraduate major at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures focuses on humanistic exploration of East Asian traditions. This program emphasizes modern and classical language proficiency, contextual analysis of diverse East Asian texts, and the cultivation of strong writing and analytical abilities. Learners explore the rich literary, artistic, philosophical, and cultural heritage of East Asia and its modern evolution, with courses that adopt global perspectives and interdisciplinary methods.
The curriculum develops competency in modern language skills (speaking, reading, writing) while introducing historical language forms. Majors can choose from extensive course options covering literature, popular culture, philosophy, and linguistics, available both in translation and original languages.
The program attracts students with diverse academic interests, with many pursuing dual majors across various fields such as anthropology, mathematics, architecture, art disciplines, business, sciences, humanities, social sciences, and performing arts.
To be considered for admission to UC Berkeley, international applicants must:
finish secondary school and
earn a certificate of completion, which allows admission to a university in their home country or country of graduation
The university requires further study, either completion of the two-year A-level program with a minimum of three academic exams, the IB diploma program, or another similar academic curriculum.
For (IBT) minimum score of 80 or better, Paper-based test (completed prior to Oct. 2017): Minimum score of 550 or better, Revised paper-delivered test (completed Oct. 2017 or later): Minimum score of 60 or better, (IELTS) Accepted with a 6.5 or better band score (academic modules)
