Studying pharmacology and toxicology provides a strong foundation in biomedical principles and research techniques, preparing you for advanced academic pursuits or professional roles in various industries.
While pharmacology is sometimes mistaken for pharmacy, these are distinct fields. Pharmacology focuses on biomedical research, whereas pharmacy involves medication preparation, distribution, and clinical application in healthcare.Pharmacologists investigate how chemical compounds impact biological systems. This includes examining natural compounds like hormones and neurotransmitters, as well as pharmaceutical drugs and environmental toxins. Our field intersects with numerous disciplines—including physiology, biochemistry, immunology, psychology, microbiology, chemistry, and medicine, among others.
Our department excels in specialized areas such as neuropharmacology, pharmaceutical development, and translational research—bridging the gap between laboratory findings and clinical applications.
Have earned the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma.  If you have already completed secondary school, you need to submit both academic transcripts and proof of graduation with your application documents. 
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.000, both overall and at the University at Buffalo
