The Department of East Asian Studies provides two Master's degree options: specialized Area Master's programs and broader General Master's programs. The Area Master's degrees allow specialization in either Chinese or Japanese studies, primarily serving as preparation for doctoral programs (though students may also complete them as final degrees). These programs typically require a thesis, except for linguistics students who can opt for a comprehensive exam. The General Master's degrees offer flexibility to concentrate on China, Japan, or both regions, with students choosing between a thesis or departmental paper. This track caters to those not pursuing doctoral studies.
