The Geographic Information Systems Technology (GIST) master's program and certification equip students with skills for the rapidly expanding geospatial field.
This program combines GIScience, advanced GISystems, and spatial technologies with leadership training applicable to government, business, nonprofit, and academic environments. The rigorous coursework caters to both working professionals aiming to advance their careers and new graduates entering the job market.
Housed in the School of Geography, Development & Environment, all GIST students are represented by the School's
graduate association (Southern Arizona Geographers Association). SAGA primarily serves as a platform for graduate students to address professional
growth, academic matters, and teaching concerns. The organization also fosters community through social events for graduate students.
Given the wide range of research specialties and backgrounds, SAGA ensures every graduate student can express opinions and build meaningful
connections that extend beyond their time at Arizona into their professional lives. SAGA organizes intramural sports teams, fall semester camping trips, and School merchandise design. Past initiatives include hosting the inaugural Western Geography Graduate Conference in 1997 and a Guest Speaker Series. A SAGA delegate also participates in School faculty meetings.
