The Department of Russian and Slavic Studies provides a comprehensive academic program covering literature, grammar, conversational skills, linguistics, and cultural studies. This curriculum focuses on developing practical abilities to prepare students for advanced studies, research positions, teaching roles, government work, and business opportunities. Students can earn a Master of Arts degree in Russian by completing 33 graduate-level units. The department features two specialization paths: Language, Literature, and Linguistics (LLL) and Russian and East European Studies (REES).
For the LLL track, applicants must hold a Bachelor's Degree with at least 16 upper-division Russian course units.
The REES track requires a Bachelor's Degree plus two years of Russian language study. If additional language preparation is needed, the Graduate Advisor can create a customized plan allowing students to take English-taught graduate courses in fields like History, Political Science, Geography, and Comparative Cultural Studies while improving their Russian language proficiency.
