To earn the Master of Arts degree, students must complete at least 33 graduate units, with a minimum of 30 units from German Studies department courses. All master's candidates must take GER 508, while GER 579 is mandatory for first-semester graduate teaching assistants. Thesis Option: With approval from the departmental Graduate Committee, students may pursue a thesis, earning up to 3 units through GER 910.
Degree candidates must successfully complete both written and oral comprehensive exams. The M.A. Oral Examination includes a 20-minute German-language segment, assessing the candidate's ability to articulate academic arguments in German. Additionally, non-native German speakers must demonstrate B2/advanced intermediate proficiency in reading and listening through recognized tests like the Goethe Zertifikat, TestDaF, or ACTFL exams during their first-year spring semester.
