The mining sector constantly faces evolving obstacles—from natural phenomena to technological hurdles—that demand creative problem-solving. Today, a key focus in mineral extraction involves minimizing environmental impacts while maintaining operations. Striking a balance between economic growth fueled by mining and sustainable resource management has become critical, elevating the value of engineers skilled in developing and implementing low-waste processing techniques.
Mineral extraction represents a specialized field within mining engineering, requiring hands-on expertise. These innovative approaches will grow increasingly vital as global priorities shift toward ecological and economic sustainability in resource development.
The Graduate Certificate in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy equips professionals with cutting-edge techniques for optimizing metal and material recovery. Developed by mining leaders and University of Arizona faculty, the program blends scientific principles with economic analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of mineral processing challenges.
Participants gain advanced knowledge in hydrometallurgy, leaching, and water chemistry—skills essential for mastering modern aqueous extraction methods. While covering various processing techniques, the program particularly emphasizes these emerging technologies shaping the industry's future.
This 15-credit program combines 12 required units with 3 elective credits, all transferable to the Master of Engineering in Mining and Geological Engineering for those pursuing advanced studies after certification.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants who apply for admission to the Graduate College are evaluated on the individual merits of their academic achievements and scholarly potential to complete graduate-level coursework and curriculum requirements. A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 2.75 based on a 4.00 scale, is required for admission to a Graduate College Certificate program. Calculation of the GPA is based on the following:
Twelve or more graded units obtained as a graduate student
Applicant's undergraduate record comprised of their most recent 60 graded units
Or a combination of the last 60 units of undergraduate and graduate coursework (2 year, full-time equivalent for non-US or non-semester type credit hours) when fewer than twelve units of graduate coursework have been completed
On very rare and exceptional circumstances will a student be accepted through the graduate college with a GPA below a 2.75
Prospective students holding a comparable bachelor's degree but not meeting the minimum 2.75 GPA requirement may still be eligible for admission as a Graduate Non-Degree seeking student.
Students who DO NOT meet the minimum 2.75 GPA requirement with their undergraduate coursework may choose to satisfy their Graduate College minimum GPA requirement while in graduate Non-Degree Status. Students who complete 12 semester units of non-degree graded (A,B,C) 500 level or higher coursework with a minimum grade-point average of 2.75 are eligible to apply to a certificate program. Once students have received 12 or more graduate units, the graduate GPA will be the only GPA the Graduate College will use to finalize admission. Individual programs may still consider all coursework when making recommendation decisions for a particular degree program. Students may transfer up to twelve Non-Degree status units into their desired degree program with the approval of their program and the Graduate College Degree Certification office.
