The UAF Metalsmithing program provides both Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in metal arts. Introductory jewelry and metalworking classes are structured across three progressive levels. Novices start with shaping flat nonferrous sheets and wires, while intermediate learners explore tool creation, casting techniques, and cold joining methods. Advanced pupils master hammering, thermal treatments, chemical processes, and specialized equipment. The curriculum fosters analytical approaches to creating practical and artistic pieces, with an emphasis on overcoming design challenges. Participants are motivated to refine their artistic vision and craftsmanship through innovative material applications and creative exploration.
