Atmospheric science encompasses diverse disciplines studying the physical and chemical characteristics and processes of Earth's atmosphere. Recent developments highlight how the atmosphere interacts with other Earth system components like land, oceans, and sea ice.

At the UAF Geophysical Institute, International Arctic Research Center, and other university research centers, multidisciplinary teams including biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers conduct cutting-edge atmospheric research in polar regions. Their investigations span atmospheric chemistry, climate modeling, cloud physics, weather forecasting, and upper atmospheric phenomena. Researchers also explore ocean-atmosphere dynamics, polar weather systems, radiation processes, and interactions between the atmosphere and cryosphere using advanced remote sensing techniques.
