The OPT (PH) program is ideal for students with a physics background or those looking to supplement their physics coursework while studying optics.
The curriculum requires minimal prior graduate-level physics knowledge. Note that the OPT degree does not qualify students to take either the Physics Comprehensive Exam or the OSE Preliminary Exam for Ph.D. program admission.
UAH's Physics & Astronomy Department aims to cultivate exceptional students, providing guidance and support to help them excel as scientists and future leaders in scientific and societal fields. Alumni have pursued rewarding careers across academia, industry, government, and private sectors. This degree signifies comprehensive knowledge of core physics disciplines, plus specialized expertise in areas like astrophysics or optics.
Students can complete the course-based track in as little as 18 months. The thesis track typically takes about 2 years, with an Optics and Photonics concentration available for working professionals seeking advanced study in these fields.
